How It Works
Book spine width is the thickness of the text block plus the cover boards and covering material. The text-block portion of the math is straightforward — multiply the number of sheets by the paper's per-sheet thickness (called bulk in the trade). The per-sheet thickness depends on both the paper's weight (gsm) and its density: two 100 gsm papers can differ in bulk by 10-20% because one is denser and the other is more fibrous.
The formula:
Text block spine = (Page count / 2) × Sheet thickness
Page count divided by 2 because each physical sheet holds two pages (front and back). Sheet thickness is drawn from published paper stock tables such as the Talas paper reference (talasonline.com/paper) and manufacturer bulk figures — for common stocks:
- 80 gsm cream lined paper — 0.10-0.11 mm per sheet
- 100 gsm bright white — 0.13-0.14 mm per sheet
- 130 gsm matte-coated photo paper — 0.14-0.16 mm per sheet
- 150 gsm cream book paper — 0.20-0.22 mm per sheet (higher bulk for the same gsm)
For hardcover binding, add the cover boards and cloth thickness manually. Standard binder's board is 2-3 mm per side; the cloth or paper covering adds 0.2-0.5 mm. A 200-page book at 130 gsm coated paper has a text block spine of 100 × 0.15 = 15 mm, plus 2 × 2.5 mm boards + 2 × 0.3 mm cloth = 20.6 mm total spine. Hollow-back vs tight-back binding changes what the spine looks like from the outside but not the internal spine width. The spine width the tool computes is the dimension the cover boards need to span.
How to Use This Calculator
- Enter the total page count — every page including blanks, front matter, index, etc.
- Choose the paper stock — from the built-in database of 20+ common papers, or enter a custom bulk factor if your stock isn't listed.
- Optional: add signatures info — if the book is sewn in signatures, the tool factors in the extra thickness the sewing adds at the spine (typically 0.5-1 mm total for a 200-page book).
- Optional: add cover board thickness — 2-3 mm per side is standard for hardcover; leave at 0 for text-block-only calculations.
- Optional: add cover material thickness — 0.2-0.5 mm for cloth, 0.1-0.2 mm for paper.
- Read the total spine width — reported in millimetres with a breakdown of text block + boards + cover material.
Real-World Use Cases
Custom photo book
A photographer binds a hardcover album with 200 pages of 130 gsm matte-coated paper. Sheet thickness ~0.15 mm, so text block spine = 100 × 0.15 = 15 mm. Adding 2 × 2.5 mm cover boards + 2 × 0.3 mm cloth = 20.6 mm total spine width. She uses that number to cut the spine strip of the cloth cover to the correct width before glue-up.
Journal in a low-bulk paper
A stationer produces 250-page journals in 80 gsm cream lined paper. Sheet thickness ~0.105 mm, so text block spine = 125 × 0.105 = 13.1 mm. This is a softcover (perfect-bound), so no cover board thickness. She trims the paperback cover spine strip to 13.1 mm exactly.
Wedding guest book
A bookbinder produces a 96-page hardcover guest book with 300 gsm archival cover boards. Sheet thickness of the 200 gsm interior paper is 0.24 mm, so text block spine = 48 × 0.24 = 11.5 mm. Cover boards are 2 × 3 mm = 6 mm + 2 × 0.4 mm cloth = 12.3 mm additional. Total spine width = 11.5 + 12.3 = 23.8 mm. The bookbinder uses this to lay out the cloth spine before gluing to the boards.
Tips & Safety Notes
- Measure your specific paper stock. Published bulk numbers are lot-average; individual reams can vary ±5%. If you have the stock in hand, measure 20 sheets with calipers and divide.
- Account for humidity. Paper absorbs moisture and expands. A binding done at 40% relative humidity may have a tighter spine at 60% RH. Store paper at the binding environment's humidity for at least 24 hours before binding.
- Add margin for the fold at signatures. Sewn signatures add roughly 0.5-1 mm to the total text block thickness beyond the calculated bulk (the sewing thread has thickness of its own).
- Test-cut the spine cloth on scrap. A 0.5 mm error on a 25 mm spine cloth is visible; test-cut on scrap first, dry-fit, then commit to the final cut.
- The tighter the sewing, the thinner the finished spine. Loose thread creates a slightly puffier text block; tight thread compresses it. Adjust for your own binding tension by measuring one test book.
Limitations & What This Tool Cannot Do
- Paper database is nominal. The tool uses published bulk factors averaged across common paper stocks. Actual stocks vary ±5% from lot to lot and by relative humidity at binding time. When precision matters, measure your own paper.
- No cover material allowance built in. The tool reports the text-block spine width and optional board thickness; it does not automatically add covering cloth or paper thickness — you enter that manually because it varies by material.
- Only handles rectangular text blocks. Books with foldouts, tipped-in signatures, mixed paper stocks, or gathered rather than sewn signatures need manual per-signature accounting. The tool assumes a single-stock, uniform-page-count text block.

How is book spine width calculated?

Why do different paper stocks give different spine widths for the same page count?
Bulk depends on both weight and density. A dense coated stock is thinner per gsm; a bulky uncoated cream stock is thicker per gsm. Two papers at 100 gsm can differ in bulk by 20% — the same 200-page book can range from 12-16 mm text block spine depending on stock choice.
Should I include cover board thickness in the spine calculation?
Yes for hardcover — cover boards add 4-6 mm total (2-3 mm per side) plus 0.4-1 mm of cloth. For softcover (perfect-bound, saddle-stitch), the cover paper is thin enough to ignore for spine cutting purposes. The tool lets you add or skip board thickness with a toggle.
How does a hollow-back binding differ from a tight-back in spine planning?
Both need the same internal spine width — the dimension the cover boards need to span. Tight-back glues the covering cloth directly to the text block spine; hollow-back leaves an air gap. Aesthetically they look different, but the spine-width math is identical.
What tolerance should I build in for real-world binding variation?
Add 1 mm to whatever the calculator says for the initial cut, then trim to fit after dry-fitting the book block into the cover. Real books vary by ±0.5-1 mm from the calculated width due to paper humidity, sewing tension, and glue thickness — starting with a slightly-oversized spine cloth and trimming is safer than cutting to the exact number.
Can I use this for perfect-bound softcovers as well as hardcover cloth binding?
Yes. For perfect-bound softcovers, the spine width equals the text block width (no boards, no cloth). Enter zero for board and cover material thicknesses. The tool reports the text-block spine width, which is what you cut the softcover spine strip to.
